SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A new exhibition in San Francisco aims to show the diversity and creativity of modern fashion for Muslim women.
"Contemporary Muslim Fashions" opens Saturday at the de Young Museum with ensembles from around the world, including designers in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
The clothes are vibrant, elegant and playful. They range from high-end couture to sassy streetwear.
The people behind the show say it presents Muslim women as independent people in control of what they wear rather than subjects with a restrictive dress code.
It's the first major museum exhibition of its kind.
One of the outfits featured is a British designer's hooded knee-length dress from 2012 that was designed to allow Muslim girls to rappel and climb comfortably. It was worn over pants.
